"The Usual Passages" demo

When I started to speak in English, I always wanted to say, "I can be more talkative. I am more interesting than how I sound right now, even though I sound stupid. " I hope I do not have such a profound persecution complex that I think people look down on me because I can't speak in my second language properly But I could not help to feel the power balance between people who can speak and who can not. I came back to Japan and released that there are people who can't understand English while I am speaking in it. I don't think I am any better than they are but I feel confused. I also thought I could speak Japanese really well, but in fact I am not that good. I am a little disappointed. This was how I started to make "The Usual Passages" I have interviewed people at a bank in Tokyo where I used to work, and asked them to talk in English and Japanese about their daily commute from their homes. One interviewee is seen in two monitors speaking in different languages simultaneously. I am interested in the difference between facial and verbal expression when we speak in English and Japanese. For example, I swear a lot in English but never in Japanese. On the train, I feel a sudden attention when I am with foreign friend speaking in English. At the same time I pay attention, checking who is speaking non-Japanese when I hear English. This sudden mild tension in public area interests me. I seem to go back and forth of different territory as I speak different language.
